painting of man hiking in snow

Dada sent me a large batch of photos. This time, he said they were part of a series of animals, insects, and fish. Among them was a painting by Giacomo Balla that I had seen in my freshman-year “Introduction to Digital Media” class. If I were to ask my dad about that piece, he would probably lecture for a full hour without a problem. I’ll save that conversation for a day when my brain is charged up.

I do that too. I take photos of dogs in the cars next to me while waiting at red lights. Like father, like daughter.

June Kee “Do you know what the difference is between a photograph and reality?”

Chaehyun “What is it?”

June Kee “The difference between a photograph and reality is resolution. Isn’t that incredibly precise wording? Isn’t it amazing?”

Chaehyun “Photography started as a way to preserve reality.”

June Kee: “And yet no one had ever articulated it this clearly in words!”

painting of the water

Dad goes to the Gyejoksan trail every week.

Chaehyun “What photos do you take?”

June Kee “Sceneries. I want to use it for message cards. Mom’s birthday is coming up too.”

Dad makes a celebration card for family birthdays. I hadn’t realized this until now, but it seems that every year, when the new season comes around, he always takes new photos—background images meant for the new celebration days.

Chaehyun “Dad, do you still take a lot of photos?”

June Kee “No.”

Chaehyun “Why?”

June Kee “It used to be something I did naturally as part of everyday life, but taking photos is hard now. You have to concentrate. Things that require physical and mental immersion are really tiring.

I realized that the things I used to do naturally actually required far more than ordinary effort. I’m physically tired. I find it hard now to stay focused on any one thing for a long stretch of time.”
